Nous
From Caduceus Database
Nous is the first form of Neo-GUILT, similar in shape to the Star of David. It creates spore tumors that must be treated in the order they appear. Nous also has much the same properties as a tumor. The first person infected with Nous was Emilio Juarez, who was infected during a liver transplant.Unlike other Neo-GUILT, Nous is not explained as being a performance enhancing organism; however, based on the belief system of Patrick Mercer, it is likely that Nous did have a beneficial effect at some point. The name "Nous" comes from the Greek word for "Wisdom" (hence X-4's full title "Confidential Operation 4 - Nous, the malignant side of Wisdom"), so it is possible Nous was originally intended as some sort of learning agent, similar to Sige. This would also explain why Nous' original host (i.e. the donor of Emilio's liver) became brain dead.

[edit] Treatment
[edit] Pre-GUILT
Nous lacks a traditional Pre-GUILT stage: the operation on Emilio Juarez has you transplant the liver before confronting Nous, whilst X4: Nous skips the transplant and goes directly to the GUILT.
[edit] GUILT
A number of tumors (anywhere between 3 and 6) will appear in a specific order on the organ, followed by the main Nous body. These must be drained and excised in the order they appear. If the tumors are treated out of order, all of those that appeared before the one you treated will explode, dealing around 30-35 points of damage to the vitals. From the moment that the player can do anything to Nous or its tumors, a hidden timer starts ticking down. If this timer reaches zero, a "miss" is declared by the game, Nous retreats into the liver without taking damage and any remaining tumors instantly explode. If the player succeeds in draining all of the tumors, they may then attempt to drain and excise Nous directly. Success in doing this before the timer expires counts as a "hit", 5 or 6 of which are enough to defeat Nous and succeed in the operation. However, if the player attempts to treat Nous prior to the removal of the tumors, all tumors present explode, normally causing enough vital damage to kill the patient.
[edit] General Tips
It is very important to to try to remove all the tumors in order, but if the main body is close to diving, go immediately to it as the tumors will burst if it dives anyways, and the tumors bursting does not cause a miss; however, allowing a tumor to burst breaks your chain and may cause you to earn a lower rank at the end of the operation.
[edit] Stats and Attacks
Nous only has two attack:
- Tumor Creation - Nous will appear, along with a varying number of green, spore-like tumors. These tumors must be treated in the order they appear, with Nous last to be drained and cut; otherwise, the untreated tumors will burst.
- Dive - Nous will dive into the organ, causing a "miss" and rupturing any remaining tumors.
In the battle against Aletheia, any appearing Nous will dive into the organ, and release a single tumor that must be excised.
